Pioneer and the founder of Sangharama English School
Our tribute and felicitation should be honoured to the pioneer and the founder of Sangharama
English School. It is 66 years ago, our chief incumbent most Ven. Mampe Wimalakeerthi thero
started this school. His outstanding and efficacious commitment for the young school children is a
long process which dates back to nearly 7 decades.
The whole nation is deeply indebted to the great service he has rendered to the country in making
generations strong in the prestigious language spoken by United Nations. He was a well-mannered
disciplinarian and maintained his rules and regulations to its highest peak. It is not an exaggeration
to say that he hoped and looked forward everything at its highest peak.
His intellectual determination was to produce good knowledgeable citizens those who not only
English speaking but also well mannered, disciplined and dutiful.
That is because of his inspiration gave an immense number of intellectuals in Sri Lanka to have a
good command in English. He was the beacon light in Galle area in English teaching which made his
prudent workmanship to Sangharama English School as Lanka Matha’s right school.
Vision
We do not consider education to be mere knowledge of subjects. Subjects are taught in this Institution not merely to acquire a mass of information, but to discipline one's mind, to sharpen one's intellect and to refine one's emotions. Students, therefore, in this Institution are taught to cultivate good manners and develop a so sound character to be soft and gentle in their speech, to conduct themselves with decorum. Our belief is that if they neglect this formation, it will be impossible for them later on to shake themselves free from the impact of a slovenly and censorious scholastic life. Bright or blight, buoyant or bleak, we guide them to take time by the forelock to radiate peace and joy wherever they may be-- to shine like a beacon light-- to glorify their Institution and prove themselves worthy of its traditions.

History
It was nearly 7 decades ago that we felt that ENGLISH ALONE COULD LIFT HUMANITY
AND LEAD IT TO THE COMMONWEALTH OF WORLD HERITAGE. We also knew
then that ENGLISH alone has the attributes of a world language, that Ven. Mampe
Wimalakeerthi Thero founded this Institution without dilly-dallying on what we should do.
You too will admit the fact that there is no other means today than ENGLISH that could
serve as a common link and create amity in a country like SRI LANKA. Surely, the much
spoken and much needed NATIONAL UNITY in this country can be achieved only through a
common language like ENGLISH.
Our existence and exertions for the past years have been only justified bringing home to our
students the crying need for ENGLISH to become citizens of this world. From the very
inception of this Institution, it has been functioning unremittingly that it has by now turned
out thousands and thousands of students who, today hold responsible position both in the
Government and the private sector. They all give the benefit to the ENGLISH education they
have had in this Institution, and to the strict discipline they were taught to adhere to. In fact,
our service to the student public for the past years has been an unchallengeable record of
revolutionary coaching in ENGLISH.
By fostering the growth of ENGLISH we have been only serving our Motherland to wipe out
poverty, disease and unemployment which have been the sources of suppression and
oppression on her for so long.
Considering ENGLISH as the key to human thought and knowledge, we have maintained a
very high standard of ENGLISH for the past years through this long journey, which we vouch
to uphold throughout as long as this Institution stands. Hence, now the school is in the safe
hand of a disciple of Loku Hamuduruwo and he is non-other than Ven. Walpola Anuruddha Thero, the guiding star of Sangharama English School in the present day context.
